As part of the Centre en art actuel Sporobole’s ZOOM OUT event, discover the practice of Saguenay artist Mathieu Valade.

For Valade, art is a game: a game of scale, of codes, but especially of perception. His works invest the evocative power of forms and symbols to create illusionist universes that evade the eye. The exhibition Mathieu Valade . The Treachery of Images brings together more than a dozen works in various media, from watercolor to video, and presents nearly a decade of artistic research. Let yourself be enchanted by trompe-l’oeil and optical illusions in a rich and sensory multimedia journey. According to this artist, nothing is true, but nothing is totally false. Just let yourself be taken in by the game.

 

Biography of the artist

Mathieu Valade lives and works in Saguenay. He is a professor of sculpture and drawing at the visual arts department of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. Represented by Galerie 3 in Quebec City, he has exhibited his work in several venues in the province and internationally, including the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Musée d’art contemporain de la Province de Hainaut in Belgium, the Centre Bang in Chicoutimi, Circa Art Actuel and Occurrence in Montreal. His works are part of several collections, including the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul. In 2017, the City of Quebec awarded him the Mérites d’Architectures prize for his public art piece Éphémères durables, installed at the Maison de la littérature.
